No, it's not what you think!
Natural gas was first found near Dexter, KS in 1903. The town, envisioning a prosperous future, advertised its discovery far and wide. Crowds gathered to see the well fired, then watched in dismay as the roaring gas blew out every flame near it. For two years it was scornfully called “wind gas.†Then analysis revealed that it contained almost two percent helium.

McKean CountySmethport, PASee map: Google MapsMcKean County, PA was formed on March 26, 1804 out of Lycoming County. Named for Pennsylvania Governor Thomas McKean. Smethport, the county seat, was incorporated in 1853.
