All about Hotots
September 19, 2007 - 12:32pm — Dhlover
I'd like to introduce everyone to my 4 baby bunnies. They weigh about 5 ounces. They were born on August 31st. I have 3 does and 1 buck. Cloud Puff and Vanilla like to get out of the nesting box and eat Mama's food. They all can get out of the box. Thumper is a doe with huge feet. Coconut likes to sleep. I'm learning that rabbits grow fast. I took their Dad, White Coat, to a rabbit show last weekend. He won 2 Best of Breed awards. He has 2 legs and needs 3 legs total to be a Grand Champion. A leg is when you get Best of Breed with a certain number of other rabbits there. I'm hoping that my rabbits produce more good rabbits and show well.

Way to Go!
You must be so proud of your award-winning rabbit! Congratulations! I can't believe how much they've grown since the first picture.
The photos are wonderful, but I do some questions:
How do you tell them apart?
Do Dwarf Hotots come in other colors besides white?
They look like they have pretty short ears for rabbits. Will their ears get longer?
Are there "Giant" Hotots, or at least others that aren't dwarfs? Is this a special breed? How big will they get?
I'm looking forward to learning more about these little guys. I'm so glad you joined us here!
Thanks for the Questions!
Thank you for the questions! Here are the answers: To tell the babies apart, to find Vanilla I look for the smallest of all them.To find Cloud Puff I look in the baby bunnies eyes till I find a ruby glint. Thumper & Marshmellow are harder to tell apart, but it's easier because I'm starting to get to know their personality. And for your second question, no, Dwarf Hotots only come in white. But the Dwarf Hotots have eyebands around their eyes. There are black bands, choclate bands and blue bands. Bands look like eyeliner. Dwarf Hotots do have short ears. They should be about 2 inches long. And they shouldn't be touching. Dwarf Hotots are a pretty rare breed. Ohio has the most breeders of that breed, and it's a estimate of 25 to 30 breeders! If they are over 3 lbs. it is a disqualification. For your question on "Are there Giant Hotots". There is a breed Blanc De Hotots. I honestly don't know if they are related. I forgot to tell you, Hotot is prounounced with no t at the end & long o's
White out
So let me make sure I have this -- the name is pronounced as if it were spelled "hoe-toe." Is that right? It seems to be French -- are these a breed of lagomorphs from France?
All these white rabbits have been reminding me of one of my favorite stories that also had a white rabbit (although he was apparently quite large) -- Alice in Wonderland (I like the drawings of this version at Project Gutenberg).
You know, if you become a really successful breeder, you're going to need all of us to help you think up more "white" names!
German Rabbit
Yes, it is prounounced 'hoe-toe'. And like the title says, these lagamorphs of the leporidae family, were first bred in Germany. I like the movie 'Alice in Wonderland' movie. I have never read the book though. Actually I had trouble getting names for this first batch. Next batch and I'll be bloging! ( So be thinking of names!)
Cute
Those are very cutebunnies but why dwarf hotot bunnies?
Are they hard to take care of?
Congrats on getting best of breed. That is quite an accomplishment.
Clay hardens by immobility – men's minds by standing pat. Both lose the power to take new impressions. (Pinchot 1910: 138)
Tons of Personality!
I picked dwarf hotot bunnies because they are easy to take care of. Dwarf Hotots need very little grooming, but lots of attention. Some of my bunnies are grumpy but full of it. Some are laid-back. And some just always want to be playing. They all have a lot of personality.
