I'm finally cool in junior high.....

I teach 9th grade biology.  It's in a junior high.  In the town I grew up in, and boy, at their age, I was not pretty.  braces, a bad perm, and some serious coke bottles.  Too dumb to know it wasn't cool to be smart, so a dork on top of it all.

Today, the kids had to turn in a mini research paper on careers in specific areas of biology, and we spent the period discussing them, their requirements, opportunities, etc etc.  It was fascinating what they came up with, and we completely lost track of time, we were all having such a great discussion.  Even the slackers were into it!!!

Then a few kids were asking me if i was going to the football game tonight, I was like, um, didnt knwo about it....they said 'oh you've gotta come'  etc etc.

So I went.  Al adn the kids too.  Band, majorettes, cheerleaders, fellow teachers & staff.  and students.  I kept hearing, "MRS HOGAN" over and over....it was really fun.

I've finally become popular in junior high.  It took me 20ish years.  But wow.  Anyway, it was really fun--i"m having an amazing experience teaching kids who WANT to learn, who ARE intrinsically motivated, who LIKE coming to my class.  It's outta this world.

It's really cool.  Like me. HAH!

Way To Go!

That is really cool that the kids knew you were there. I am sure that meant a lot to them. Congrats!

Difficult Times

It's hard to find teachers who are motivated! Keep it up, Mrs. Hogan!

i was UNmotivated!

this si my 12 year of teaching....the first 11 were at an alternative (read: at-risk, mostly juvenile deliquent) high school.  I know see how BURNED OUT i was, adn how the past 2-3 years how truly unmotivated I was.  I mourn that now....and the guilt hurts, but I know that i did do SOME good in that time, jsut perhaps not my best efforts.

With this position I realize how much I love teaching, how this is what i always wanted to do, and how glad I am I transferred but also have that expereince to look back upon.
