Walking into a Gardner’s Candies store is a treat. In Tyrone Pennsylvania the special experience begins as soon as you walk up to the windows. My grandmother always had a saying, “You can judge a business by how clean are the windows.” Well the windows are clean and the special window displays harken back to the days when stores created displays to lure customers into the store. This simple marketing strategy has helped Gardner’s Candies establish itself as a place for delicious treats and delightful gifts and novelties.
In 1897, the Gardner family had a passion for candy making and grew that passion into a retail enterprise before they sold it to another family owned and operated candy making company called Sarris Candies. Today the family feel of the place is carried on by Gardner’s Candies president Sam Phillips.
Companies are defined by people and Gardner's lead man is a good man. Sam came from New Jersey and was looking for a great place to live and raise his family. His Greek family in New Jersey had created their own candy company, Sam was no stranger to the industry. He was offered the job at Gardner's Candies. Sam accepted and was happy to leave northern New Jersey for Central Pennsylvania. Sam is involved in the community through many sporting activities. He feels it is important to give back to the community. Today Sam brings the family atmosphere to Gardner’s Candies. While on a factory tour, which is open to the public, I noticed every employee was smiling, laughing or joking. I guess when you make candy you want it to be a happy place.
From the Factory tour to shopping in one of the 16 store locations, Gardner’s Candies is as much about the quality of the experience as it is about the sweets made and sold. They have a Gardner’s Candies fantasyland complete with caste found in their Plank Road Store, they have a Gardner’s Museum in their Tyrone store, and they have old fashion ice cream parlors. The stores are clean, the staff helpful, and the product is delicious. Like many I am particularly drawn to the one candy that defines Gardner’s Candies, THE PEANUT BUTTER MELTAWAY.
So stop by any of their stores, take a factory tour, and enjoy the Gardner’s Candies experience. Go ahead, feel like a kid in a candy store.
