LET'S TALK: Best job ever
August 27, 2007 - 7:10pm
What's the best job you ever had?
With the Labor Day holiday coming up this weekend, it seems like a good time to think about work. Somehow, somewhere, we all gotta make a living. Some of us are lucky enough to pursue our passions and our paychecks simultaneously. Some of us find work that is challenging, while others are challenged by work. If we're lucky, we get to spend our time on the job with people we enjoy. So, c'mon, tell us about your best job ever.

Best Job
I've had a lot of jobs, having contriibuted to our ailing Social Security system for over 40 years now! Some have been good and some not so good.
I was a legal secretary in three separate Pennsylvania counties, and count that occupation among my favorite. The best thing about it was that, in the morning there were actual items in an actual inbox that you worked on throughout the day, and they ended up finished in an actual out box! Wills, deeds, and other filings for the Courthouse peppered my days. The virtual in- and out boxes I have today give me no such satisfaction.
I also spent a pleasant interlude as a bank teller, closing out my drawer with a perfect balance every single day until my last, when I was $100 short! That was weird . . .
I typeset and proofread for newspapers somewhere along the way, and even did some layout before the advent of electronic tools to accomplish that. We ran the finished columns through a waxer and stuck them on paper gridded with light blue lines.
And the past 20 years I have hopscotched through various departments at a major university. Quite an education . . .
But my most favorite job had to be working at the Dairy Queen, where I met my husband. Ours was an old fashioned storefront, and the owner - although a young man - believed in keeping busy and making everything shine. Every minute that we weren't waiting on customers we were shining up the silver topping ladels, folding stacks of take-out boxes, restocking various items, making novelties that had to be deep frozen (and dipping and bagging them once they were frozen solid), and, of course, practicing making that famous curl on top. I think of those days when I see young workers louunging around as if all of that back counter work will just take care of itself!
My work has always been rewarding. Happy Labor Day! Anne H.
Candy, Books, and Meeting People
I have enjoyed just about every job. From making sno cones in the summer to managing a $400,000 marketing program. Every job presented a unique challenge and learning experiences abounded from those experiences. Ok this is about chosing the best.
So the best job ever? Well this week has me meeting with a Candy Maker, it has me talking to an artist, it is giving me the opportunity to help a certain fishing enthusiasts, meet with a paper mill, and has me learning more about the value of Internet Marketing. The best Job Ever? Starting my own business. The hours are long. Finding customers is tough and managing the books is challenging but the pay offs are big. Working with my friends, spending time with my family, learning new skills, and helping people. I would say THIS-America's Stories- is the the best job ever.
Clay hardens by immobility – men's minds by standing pat. Both lose the power to take new impressions. (Pinchot 1910: 138)
My Awesome Internship
My internship, while studying at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, was at WQED pbs station. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. The artists in the design center were all nice and nuts, I really became addicted to classical music, and got to work for my boyhood hero, Fred Rogers. Right after my internship was done and I graduated, and thought I was sitting pretty good for a job, Government cut backs wiped out the entire design center. That's the day I realized 'all good things come to an end'.
