Wish Lists
It happens every summer, just when the really hot weather arrives. I can't stand hot weather, and can't believe that my birthday falls into the middle of it! As I've aged, the old "wish list" that everyone asks for is harder and harder to come up with. Of course, thanks to Amazon.com I have a handy list of books - my favorite possessions - but beyond that I'm stumped. We have worked hard on our home for decades, and things are pretty nice and how we like them. I have a work wardrobe and a play wardrobe, and if I need something I generally pick it up. There's really not much else a person needs . . .
Last August we threw ourselves a birthday party, honoring my 55th in July and Bill's 60th in October. We treated about 125 friends to dinner, dancing, and a fun party at a local celebration hall. We worried that people would bring the usual motley assortment of unnecessary junk to commemorate our aging. And so we struck on an idea: We specifically asked for donations to charity in our names! We listed three favorite charities, with their websites; at one of them we were able to create a personalized webpage to accept gifts. Altogether we raised well over $2,500 for good causes.
It was probably the most fun and rewarding birthday I've ever had!

And now for a word from our sponsor . . .
I like the online wish list idea . . . you know, we can do that here at Storytrax. If you opt for the premium membership, you can set up your own "store" online . . . check it out.
We now return you to our regular program.
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANNE!
You Are Good
Those are both FANTASTIC ideas. There are aleady to many things collecting dust in closets and in the attic. Collecting stories and supporting causes are two great alternatives. Anne, I like the idea of the personalized web page. Was that very difficult to establish? Who was the organization, if you don't mind sharing?
Wish lists are getting harder to generate.

Gift registry
It was Heifer International, found online at www.heifer.org. Great organization that really makes a difference in lives around the globe. And setting up a gift registry is very easy: give/registry. Glad you liked our idea :) Anne H.
excellent idea
what a fantastic idea and neat way to celebrate!! i'm so glad it worked out successfully too!
last year we hosted a 35th anniversary for my parents, and we knew that they had plenty of candlesticks, etc as well. So on the invites, we asked each guest to write a letter to my parents with their favorite memories of them in there....a few sundays later we all sat around and read them all, it was wonderful b/c of everyone's cooperation!!!
try to beat the heat and enjoy your bday....mine is in february, alwasy a BLAH time of year. guess we're never happy, eh?
