My Bird

For years, as I've traveled between Tipton and State College, Pennsylvania, twice daily every work day, I've watched for "my bird."  He is a long-legged and dignified blue heron who often loiters in the shallow ponds and swampy areas along Route 220.  I instinctively claimed him as my talisman, and marked the movement of the seasons by his appearances.  I'd never get more than a quick glimpse any time we motored past his idyllic refuge, but a sighting always brightened my day.

My bird has obviously found a better nesting area, because he's been spotted only twice this year!  I hope that wherever he is, the sun is shining and the water is clear and the fish are plentiful.

We did see an egret one morning in the swampy area full of dead trees that I call Dagobah (named after Yoda's digs in Star Wars).  He was cute, but my heart belongs to the heron.

I've been watching one, too

I've been watching a Great Blue in the Frankstown Branch of the Juniata along Route 866, just east of the Route 22 intersection. I've been seeing it almost everyday, especially when the water is low.

Yesterday at Fort Roberdeau, a green heron flew over. All those long-legged fishing birds are just awesome.

the big tree on the back road

Anne- have you ever seen that big, beautiful tree on 45 right near the Pennsylvania Furnace sign?  It sits off to the right if you are heading to state college, in the middle of a bare field.  It is the most perfect tree.  I've always tried taking photos of it, but no good ones have shown up.  Then, at the arts fest up there a couple of years ago, someone took a 4 photos of that same tree, during the different seasons.  it's marvelous., but they want $500  for it.  Do you know which tree I am referring too? That tree

Cory - I don't travel 45 too often, and will have to look for that special tree.  I know what you mean . . . sometimes things are just perfect!  There is a single tree in a farm field on the right as you approach Seven Stars from Warriors Mark.  That's one that I think would make a stunning photo.  Keep trying!  Anne H.
