BLOOD, SWEAT, & LOTS OF TEARS

Being a mascot is the toughest job I'll ever love.  Lots of blood, from the stumbles, tumbles, fumbles and rumbles we take and fake.  Tons of sweat, being funny under furry and fuzzy conditions in the heat of the summer make for a Gatorade Brigade.  And, today, lots of tears flooded my eyes with probably one of the nicest letters I've ever received since playing Steamer for some 8 seasons.

Now, the letter was not sent directly to me, but to my bookie and agent and manager and pimp, Elsie Zengel of the Altoona Curve.  Just to give you a quick set up: yesterday, Memorial Day, I was asked to make a personal Steamer appearance to a couple and their children's picnic.  They won a FREE appearance and Curve Burgers from our Hot Stove Auction back in January.  They had their family and friends at their house, and I had a blast.  It's not often that I get such nice letters from someone's father.  It's usually, after an appearance, we follow up with a courtesy call, asking, 'how was everything?'  Usually followed by, " Steamer was a lot of fun!"  Those words always ALWAYS bring a smile to my face.  But, I gotta share this letter with you.  I will admit, I balled my eyes out.  For a hard-headed Kraut, I'm a softie on the inside.

Elsie,

I want to let you know what an excellent job “Steamer” did at our family picnic yesterday afternoon.  He called yesterday morning to confirm the plans, determine whether there would be kids at the party, etc.  His telephone conversation with Jodie communicated excitement about coming to the event.  Upon his arrival he immediately engaged the kids and headed to our backyard for some wiffleball.  He had a great attitude during his time at our home and he represented the Altoona Curve in such a positive manner that I wanted to make certain you all were made aware of it.  My youngest nephew is very afraid of “characters.”  When Steamer first came out he my nephew was scared to death.  By the end of Steamer’s visit my nephew was sitting at a table drawing pictures of (and with) Steamer.  That perhaps best captures the amazing job Steamer did at our picnic.

Thanks Elsie!

Troy
This is why I love my job!  Thank you so much Elsie for sending this to me, it's totally been a bright light on the dismal and dim days I have been having.  You are an angel.
And, to Troy, just like the song says, "I'd do it all over again."

aww

that is really great.  you do a wonderful job...you enthralled our friends when we had that box that night, see below!!!!

A few years back i started writing letters or emails about excellenet service i receive.  It makes a HUGE difference to the employee.  I learned this at Kaufmann's dept store, where even when I was a lowly part time clerk in the mens dept, I earned a few letters for helpfulness, and it makes your day, as it makes your emplyer more appreciative.

I am so glad you got some recognition....in my position i never get ANY recognition (teachers are usually complained about, but ones at an alternative school, forget it, we're all evil and the parents could care less about what we do).  It really does help make your job a little better!!!

Congrats and enjoy!

The family resemblance is STRIKING...doncha think?????????
