Sea Turtles In Entriken?

Spring is here - the Entriken "sea" turtles are on the beach laying eggs.

Okay the sea turtle is really a snapping turtle and the beach is our yard near the pond, but they are digging holes and laying eggs just like their saltwater cousins.   The spring event usually takes place after dark, but this one didn't make it back to the stream or pond before daylight so we got some pictures before releasing her.  We have seen specimens that are huge - almost tire-sized and they have a nasty disposition so we handle them with care.

Target Practice

Young kids in Oklahoma learn how to use a gun on these beauties!  We have heard many stories from folks who have streams running through their property and have had a multitude of large snapping turtles.  Some have even blamed these guys for the loss of their small pets.  Fact or Fiction-  not sure - but they were fun stories to tell around the weenie roasts!

Won't win a beauty contest!

That is one ugly critter!

When I was working on an archeological survey in the St. Francis Sunk Lands of southeastern Missouri, we would sometimes encounter snapping turtles. I saw one snap a broomstick in half! That renewed my respect for them, and, like poison ivy and snakes, I gave them as wide a berth as I possibly could.
