For The Bookworms

Have you ever heard of Tim Spalding? Likely you have not heard of him, I did not even hear of him until I read a magazine article in Business2.0. Several years ago Tim started putting together a list of books he read on his Apple IIE. These books were the Adventures of Tintin, Encyclopedia Brown Boy Detective and many more. Today, Tim, now a programmer has created a huge list of books he and his wife own.
This list is now a hot new social network called librarything.com. The idea of this social network is not based on who you know but what you read. Tim created it because he wanted to create a list of his books, compare that to other peoples list and talk about literature with people who shared his reading tastes. It has really caught on with bookworms all over the globe. Users at the site have tagged, listed or recommended more than 10 million works.
How Does It Work?
Set up a free user profile to catalog up to 200 books, or pay $10 a year or $25 for life to enter more. Add books to your LibraryThing profile by titl or ISBN, and enter tags about each book’s subject matter. Get recommendations from bookshelves of other users whose tastss and tags are similar to yours.
LibraryThing is really growing. Just last year AbeBooks bought a 40 percent ownership in the company and began using its recommendations in March. Spalding’s next target is to set up a business that helps libraries manage their own catalogs.
