HAUREL & LARDY part 5 ( Lots of extra packing )

Before we knew it, school was out and it was only a couple of weeks until we would be heading to Tinsletown. All of the sudden I had an idea of a gimmick to add to our act.  I saw a KIT KAT BAR commerical with a guy sitting on a bench pulling out huge food items from his little lunch box. I thought this illusion was humorous. So, I scripted it out with our Choreographer, Gene Kale, an actor from Pittsburgh to have Laurel and Hardy in a hotel room with Ollie pulling out huge clothing items from the little stuffed suitcase. Stuff like an entire zoot suit, a large coat rack, a ukelele and a mallet.  A mallet to knock me, Stanley, on the cabeza.

I had my grampap build us extra props and scenery.  This was a pain to carry.  He made it so all the props were foldable and packable. But traveling with extra junk was not fun. And, after we did a dry run rehersal where everything caved in and collapsed, we began to learn the seriousness of comedy.  But it worked in the final run.  Here's the actual clip from the colorized version of WAY OUT WEST of Laurel and Hardy singing THE TRAIL OF THE LONESOME PINE.  Watch for the mallet at the end, and when I show you our final sketch, you'll see where it came from.

A lot of Work

A childhood star. I now know how they must feel. hahaha

I learned several things during this time. Timing and dancing. Two things I still bumble through today. There were a lot of extra props and you can be amazed at what fits into a suit case. If we traveled that way today I am sure security would have asked to open the bags.
