Steelhead - March 15-19 Stream Conditions
Lower Elk Creek Monday March 19
Water levels on the streams are fine and the color is good. Slower presentations with minnow and egg sacs were the most effective presetation today. Water levels should remain constant if weather predictions are right.
These photos and the video were taken at Elk Creek above the launch.

Fishing Conditions Update Noon March 17
The snow finally stopped and the sun came out to start the meltdown. Slush kept everyone frustrated until about 11 a.m. The slush and ice on lower Walnut Creek created an ice dam and kept the water level high from the stop sign hole down to the channel. Once the water began to warm, the ice jam moved down stream to the head of the channel and it may be open by tomorrow morning.
I was told that Elk Creek experienced the same slush problems.
Here is a few pictures of the ice flows at Walnut Creek:

Here is a short video clip of a guy from Beaver County who hooked and lost a nice fish. You can get a good idea of the fishing conditions and the slush problem.

Fishing Conditions Update 5 p.m. March 16
Water Levels have dropped, but snow and cold temperatures have complicated the fishing conditions. Elk Creek remains slightly high and colored and Walnut Creek is continuing to drop and clear. Slush will be a problem tomorrow as temperatures will be below freezing for the next 48 hours.

Fishing Conditions Update 5 p.m. March 15
Stream conditions continued to improve as the day went on. It was sunny for most of the day and all the snow from last night has melted. You can expect the stream levels to continue to fall and fishing will improve. Finding the fish will be the only challenge. Walnut Creek should be ready by Saturday. Upper Elk Creek by late Sunday and the lower sections by Monday.

Fishing Condition Update 10 a.m. March 15
The rains have turned to snow and the ugly storm of yesterday became a picture perfect scene. Unfortunately, the fishing conditions have not improved. Erie County and several more nearby are under a flood watch until 9 p.m. The video clip below begins at Walnut Creek and ends at Trout Run. Given the high water there, I saw no need to check Elk Creek.
There was an angler at the Stop Sign hole, two fishing the Walnut Creek Marina and three at Trout Run.
Two people who were hiking near the lake were rescued when they got stranded on the ice that separated from the shore. Looks like the warm rain and south wind has spoiled the ice fishing too.
