Lifetime Achievement Award

When Fred Rogers received the Lifetime Achievement Award, 10 years ago, the word 'humble' was the only thing that came to mind. When most recipients babble on with their acceptance speech, Fred asks the audience and viewers at home watching to 'take 10 seconds to think about the influential people in your life who helped you towards what you wanted to be or do with your life'. Amazing! It probably drove producers nuts and some of the crowd even snickered because they didn't think he was serious. But, then the reactions were pretty awesome. Didn't look like there was a dry eye in the house. Funny thing is, Fred usually took an entire minute to do that little 'thankful moment'. This clip has several people I wanted you to see. Mrs. Rogers, Joanne, who is an accomplished pianist, just like Fred. There's a little more with Jeff in the wheelchair, there is the clip I mentioned in my MEETING MR. ROGERS BLOG I video taped for storytrax.com, with Fred and Arsenio Hall and the cool jackets they were wearing. Also, Nick Tallo, who was the floor/stage manager on the Rogers' show. Fred and Nick were the best of buddies. Check out Nick's appearance. He looks like a biker. He always wore black and had tatoos all over him, but is one of the nicest, friendliest and funniest guys in Pittsburgh. I also liked watching Tim Robbins present the award to Mr. Rogers. I read somewhere after seeing this presentation, that Tim was never so nervous in his life, but when Fred was next to him, he felt the most calming and soothing feeling and was so much more relaxed. Fred had that effect on people. You would see him, and you knew he was known all over the planet, but then he'd come up and ask you how you and your family were doing. Wow! It was like he was the most down to earth joe in the world. When little kids approached Fred, some would ask him ' How'd you get out?' meaning how did he get out of the box (TV). It was pretty cute, and then to watch how Fred interacted with the children was priceless. I hope, with all these video clips, you realize what kind of a truely genuine person Fred Rogers really was. Boy, do I miss him.
