Remember catching your first steelhead? She will!

Today’s fishing day was full of firsts.

First steelhead caught by see picture above – [sorry I have her email address, but not her name]

It was the first time this week that the Walnut Creek channel ice was “crowded” – about 16 anglers showed up.

When my wife dropped me off, for the first time I forgot to get my ice rod out of the car. I borrowed a cell phone, called her and corrected the mistake. That one ranks right up there with the time I drove 275 miles to Erie without my fishing license and all my terminal tackle.

Anyway, it was a good day. We got our daily allotment of snow. The temperature was in the low twenties – trips to the "minnie" bucket were bearable.   Most anglers caught a fish. Those who did not seemed content to be there and watch those that did. Ice anglers are a special breed!

I talked to three groups of anglers who helped populate “Bay City” this morning. They reported – a city of huts and a lack of action.

Allen catching a fish and me having my camera came together today and I took his picture. Next time I need to ask him to say “cheese.”

Chuck and Ken [see snow picture above] brought an Aqua Cam. We could see fish in most locations in the channel. The video clip I took includes an underwater shot, Chuck fighting a fish, and then another angler connected so I jumped over there and finally I took a picture of Chuck with his fish.  When the action started it kept us busy.  YouTube cut off you head Chuck not me!  A better picture is below.

That was how the day went for us – no fish and plenty of talk – then three or so fish in a row – then back to more talk.

I do not anticipate any change in conditions for tomorrow or the foreseeable future. In fact, the forecast is calling for temps to remain below freezing for another seven days.

If you are planning a fishing trip to Erie any time soon, bring an ice rod.
