Erie Steelhead Ice Fishing February 9, 2007

I started at 8:00 a.m. at the Manchester Hole and the early start paid off.  I caught a fresh steelhead 10 minutes into the day on a black jig/maggot.

I fished another three hours and caught four more, but they were older, dark fish. Generally all the fish I caught at Manchester were about 22-25 inches and in decent shape.

I left Walnut, went to lunch and then took a road trip to Northeast to check 12 mile, 16 mile and 20 mile. Generally, the east side is frozen and snow covered.  I decided not to fish, but keep scouting.

From the McKean Hole downstream very little open water exists. Just a few shallow, fast runs are free of ice. I took a picture at Sterrettania – at the swinging bridge.

My last stop was Trout Run and it is covered with rough ice and looks unsafe. Some areas of ice have push up and water is seeping on to the ice.

At 2:30 p.m. I return to the Walnut Creek channel and ended the day with Allen and Mark from Uniontown, Fayette County.   Mark was doing well with jigs and minnows so I took a quick video and several pictures to end the day.

I caught a few more fish and one large “Darth Vader” male.   All my fish and most of the others caught were returned to fight another day.

It was a good day.  The weather is decent – still below freezing – light winds – mixture of sun and clouds.

Some of the snow is finally starting to melt on the highways. The salt has changed the toboggan runs back into highways.
