The Renaissance begins again -- in Butte, Montana
Location(s)
Where are the arts making a big comeback? In Butte, Montana.
An article in today's New York Times (click the link below for the story) describes how the historic town is revitalizing itself with a growing arts community. Butte was founded in the 19th century as a company town built to support the copper mining operations. When the copper mine closed, so did the town, almost. In its wake, a stock of well made buildings were left vacant downtown. Sound familiar? Across America, many towns and cities have enjoyed the boom and suffered through the bust as changing needs gut local economies of their once vital industries.Â
The people of Butte have discovered that the architectural details of those historic buildings are attracting artists in search of affordable studio and gallery space and an inspirational setting. How many other businesses would benefit by moving into historic downtowns? With the ubiquitous Internet and increasing access to broadband, we are on the verge of a new Renaissance. Technology now enables us to be practically anywhere without losing touch with the rest of the world. Even the smallest businesses now have access to global markets. So, when you're ready to turn your idea into a business, go downtown. There's probably a great old building that would look great with your name on it.
