York, PAYork County, PA was formed on August 19, 1749 from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania's fifth county to be established. York, the county seat, was laid out in 1741. When the British captured and occupied Philadelphia, the Continental Congress fled the city and met in York, 1777-78, where it adopted the Articles of Confederation and ratified treaties with France.
