Venango County, PA was formed on March 12, 1800 out of Allegheny and Lycoming counties.  Franklin, the county seat, was laid out in 1795 and became a city in 1868, as did Oil City in 1871.  The American oil industry was born here in 1859 when Colonel Drake successfully drilled a well and produced oil.
