Mercer County, PA was formed on March 12, 1800 from Allegheny County. In 1800, the U.S. census reported 3,228 residents. Named for General Hugh Mercer, Revolutionary hero killed at Battle of Princeton, 1777. Encompassing important deposits of coal and iron ore, it was an early industrial center on the Pennsylvania frontier. Mercer, the county seat, was incorporated 1814.
