Lancaster County was formed on May 10, 1729 out of Chester County and was named for Lancashire, England. The county seat, Lancaster, was laid out in 1730 and chartered a city in 1818. It was the State capital, 1799-1812. Lancaster County is recognized as an important center for the Amish community in North America and is noted for its rich farmland.
