Ridgway, PAElk County, PA was formed on April 18, 1843 from parts of McKean, Clearfield and Jefferson counties. It was named for the large elk herd that roamed the area in the 19th century. In the late 20th century, the herd was restored, and elk watching is becoming a popular activity in the eastern part of the county. Pennsylvania's first State Game Land was established near Glen Hazel in 1920. The county seat, Ridgway, was settled in 1824.
