Crawford County, PA was formed on March 12, 1800 from Allegheny County.  It was named for Colonel William Crawford, an early frontier settler and Revotionary War soldier.  Meadville, settled by 1788, was the first permanent settlement in northwestern Pennsylvania.  In 1842, the nation's first direct primary election was held here.  Located near the Pennsylvania oil fields, the county was also the home of the zipper industry.  Home of Allegheny College.
