Carbon County was formed on March 13, 1843 from Northampton and Monroe counties. Its name is derived from the element, carbon, that makes up the area's rich deposits of anthracite. The county seat, Jim Thorpe, was originally known as Mauch Chunk and was incorporated in 1850. It was renamed in 1954 for the American Indian athlete, Jim Thorpe.
