Armstrong County, PA was formed on March 12, 1800 out of Westmoreland, Allegheny, and Lycoming counties. It was named for General John Armstrong, a veteran of both the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars. The county seat, Kittanning, was an important trading post and village on the Pennsylvania frontier. The village was destroyed in 1756, during the French and Indian War, but was quickly re-established and designated the county seat in 1803.
