Somerset County, PA was formed on April 17, 1795 out of Bedford County and named for Somersetshire, England. The county seat, Somerset, was incorporated in 1804. The county has been nicknamed "America's County" because of two major events: the resolution of Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, and the rescue of nine coal miners from the Quecreek Mine in July 2002. This farm county is noted for production of maple syrup.
