I have been to the site several times. It never fails, when you visit the site you are struck by the near silence. You only hear the wind, the clanging of the flagpoles and the voices of the volunteers. Visitors even children quietly walk through the temporary memorial, some lost in thought, others overcome with emotion.I have visited numerous battlefield sites, historic sites of great intest in our nation's history. None has touched me quite as powerfully as the Flight 93 site. Those brave people.
On September 11, 2002 I got to cover the one year anniversary at the Flight 93 memorial. I was there representing a regional magazine interested in collecting stories. At the end of the ceremony, the family members boarded the bus. On one particular bus I remember seeing a little girl staring out the window, holding an American Flag with her Mother behind her waving to a crowd of over 5,000 people. The mother was clearing telling all the people "THANK YOU" While the little girl stared into the crowd. The emotion of the day got me and I lost composure as I thought there are heros here today. The family's who lost loved ones on that flight and who also gave a big price to pay for our safety and freedom. May God Bless them.
Thank you Jack for sharing this story and many thanks for the video. It is my hope that everyone someday has an opportunity to visit the site. I would strongly urge everyone to go before the new memorial is built.
I agree Erin - visiting now is a must. As the site develops, the character of what is there now and how it is presented and interpreted will change forever. Not necessarily in a negative way, but change none the less.
I had a hard time pin pointing the location on the map. I trust the location is accurate.
