THE POPE PLAYS YANKEE STADIUM

There is so much history in 'the house that Ruth built'.

It's going to be a sad day when it comes tumbling down after this baseball season.  I can't wait to go up in one month to see the Yanks vs the Mets ( btw..shea stadium coming down too this year ).  But, what a momumental occasion today in the Bronx, that our holy father, Pope Benedict will be celebrating mass there.  I am watching it right now on EWTN, which is awesome because today is Mother Angelica's 85th, the founder of EWTN.

In mid July, Billy Joel will be performing THE LAST PLAY AT SHEA, for any Mets fans ( 2 day concert sell out, fyi ).  I am so glad the Curve game was cancelled today, due to rain, so I can watch the Pope reign at Yankee Stadium.

Pope John In Philly

When I lived in Philadelphia I was able to see Pope John Paul drive by in his Pope mobile. For me it was just another guy in Philadelphia that drew a big crowd. It would be years later when I realized why there was all the excitment.

From the mouth of babes....

I was just thinking about some of the kids who attended this mass at Yankee Stadium, and I came up with a whimsical short story from the view of a 4th(ish) grader, who could possibly be there, and who is a yankees fan as well.

THE DAY THE POPE PLAYED AT YANKEE STADIUM

I THOUGHT FOR SURE THAT THE POPE WAS EITHER AN ANGELS FAN OR A PADRES FAN. BUT GOD MUST BE A YANKEES FAN, BECAUSE HE SENT HIS NUMBER ONE PLAYER TO THE HOUSE THAT RUTH BUILT.

THE POPE MUST BE A PITCHER BECAUSE HE WAS PITCHING A LOT OF GOOD NEWS TO EVERYONE IN THE STADIUM THAT SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

HE MUST BE AN IMPORTANT FIGURE BECAUSE I HAD TO KEEP MY YANKEES CAP OFF A LOT LONGER THAN JUST THE NATIONAL ANTHEM.

I ASKED MY POP, “WHAT’S THE POPE’S FIRST NAME?” DAD SAID,”HE GOES BY BENEDICT, BUT HIS REAL NAME IS JOSEPH.” THEN I THOUGHT HE MUST BE A LEGEND CAUSE I ALWAYS HEAR THE ECHOING OF PEOPLE PRAISING ‘JOLTIN’ JOE’.

THIS WAS SO COOL. JOE POPE WAS PLAYING AT YANKEE STADIUM, AND WHAT A CROWD. THE POPE CAN PACK A HOUSE. I’VE NEVER SEEN SO MANY AT YANKEE STADIUM BEFORE. THEN POP TOLD ME ABOUT THE DAY BILLY JOEL PLAYED HERE. I SAID, “ DOES BILLY JOEL PLAY FOR THE POPE?” POP CHUCKLED AND SAID, “ I’M SURE HE WOULD, IF THE POPE ASKED HIM.”
THEN I WHISPERED TO POP, “DO YOU THINK BILLY JOEL COULD PLAY PIANO MAN ON THE ORGAN?” IT SEEMED THAT THE POPE LIKED ORGAN MUSIC. POP SMILED AND TOLD ME TO PAY ATTENTION.

I’VE NEVER HEARD SO MANY PEOPLE CHEERING IN THESE STANDS BEFORE. INSTEAD OF THE 7TH INNING STRETCH, EVERYONE STOOD UP AND SANG ‘HOW LOVELY IS THY DWELLING PLACE’, WHICH I BELIEVE IS EITHER THE DUG OUT OR HOME PLATE. THEN I SAW SOME FANS GIVE GIFTS TO JOE POPE. WOW! I’VE GOTTA GET HIM TO SIGN MY BASEBALL.

THIS IS AWESOME, THE POPE MUST REALLY LOVE NEW YORK. I’VE HEARD HIM SAY ‘BAMBINO’ AND REFER TO ‘THE GREAT ONE’ A COUPLE OF TIMES, SO HE MUST’VE KNOWN BABE RUTH PERSONALLY. WOW, THIS GUY KNOWS EVERYBODY. THIS COULD DEFINITELY GET THE YANKS TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES. HOW DO I KNOW? I’VE NEVER HEARD SO MANY PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT PENNANTS LIKE THEY DID THAT SUNDAY.

I WONDERED IF JOE POPE LIKES FOOTBALL? HE PROBABLY WOULD CHEER FOR THE CARDINALS OR THE SAINTS, RIGHT? BUT I WONDER WHAT NEW YORK TEAM HE’D ROOT FOR?   THEN IT HIT ME. HE’S A GIANT IN HIS FIELD, OBVIOUSLY, BUT I THINK POPE BENEDICT WOULD CHEER FOR THE JETS. I’VE HEARD THE SONG, “BENNIE AND THE JETS”, AND, IT’S ALL IN THE TITLE. PLUS, I KEEP STATS, AND I NOTICE THESE THINGS.

I WILL NEVER FORGET THE DAY THE POPE PLAYED IN YANKEE STADIUM. EVEN THOUGH THE WALLS DID TUMBLE DOWN (THAT WAS AFTER HE WENT BACK TO HOME SWEET ROME) THERE WERE ANGELS IN THE OUTFIELD ON THAT SUNNY AND BREEZY SUNDAY AFTERNOON.
