I went down to Captain Tony's...
If you ever get to go down to explore Key West, there are so many places to see in so little time. Let me just be blunt and say "if you need a tour guide, I am your man". I have Dejavoodoo doo when I'm down there. Yes, I've been here and there before, perhaps in some other life in some other bar. Cousin Mike will hopefully back me up when I say...'when the cruise ships come in to port for just a day, does not give one the time to venture out in Key West". Plus, those daggone ships block our Mallory Square Sunset.
Most people who go to Key West are big fans of several things; the drink, history, coral reef, Jimmy Buffett, art, music, literature, snorkeling and scuba, and the night life. Oh, yes, and Pirates and wreckers. Oh one more, and the warm temps. If you love the beach, you may be disappointed by Key West beaches. Lots of ghost hunters go down there too to fish for spirits. Boy, is that a great line.
I remember my first trip down there and my very first tavern I had to see with my very own eyes. No, not Margaritaville ( but they do best darn tuna sandwiches I ever had there ). My first two places I had to see were CAPTAIN TONY'S SALOON & SLOPPY JOE'S. ( Want to see a real treat? Check out the Hemingway Look-alike contest at SJ's. Those two establishments are nearby, but I hung out at the Hog's Breath quite a bit. ( check out their 3 web cams ) Hog's Breath is not too staggering far from Cap'n Tony's ( which is actually the original Sloppy Joe's FYI ) Ernie Hemingway's hangout.
Cousin Mike, if memory serves, is a big supporter of the bars 'off the beaten path', and not the 'tourist bars'. But Mikey did like these joints. Although Margaritaville was a definite first 5 bars stop, it had to be Capt. Tony's primarily. It was the first stanza in Jimmy's song, THE LAST MANGO IN PARIS which attracted me to this hot spot.
I went down to Captain Tony's
To get out of the heat
Then I heard a voice call out to me
"Son come have a seat"
I had to search my memory
As I looked into those eyes
Our lives change like the weather
But a legend never dies
What was the first thing I noticed when I stepped into Captain Tony's?
The ceiling. What a great place to leave your business cards.
