Divine Appointments

Sometimes we are so busy that we get annoyed with interruptions and we don’t see them as divine appointments. The interruption could be a phone call, an unannounced visit from a friend, or a last minute email from a coworker. We are so busy checking things off our “to do” list, we are in a rhythm, getting things done and then “POW” some things knocks us off center.

Last night I was the interruption. My family and I were shopping at Walmart in Huntingdon Pennsylvania. I think Bing was singing “White Christmas” over the speaker system, my wife was looking for Hot Dogs and my son and I were off to the side leaning against the freezer containing frozen hamburgers and corn dogs. When off in the distance I noticed Don walking down the aisle having what looked to be a good conversation with his wife.

Don is a great guy and works for the Pennsylvania Game Commission. He has been there a number of years and we have worked together on projects in the past. When you talk to Don he puts a smile on your face. I knew I was interrupting his conversation but it was such a delight to reconnect with him for 10 minutes. It really made for a nice evening for my family. What were the odds that we would reconnect over frozen hamburgers?

Those little unexpected interruptions that may be so annoying to us can bring a lot of cheer to someone. I have heard these kinds of interruptions called Divine Appointments because God has arranged for this special meeting. A number of times in the bible Jesus is on the road, or preaching, or visiting with friends when someone requests to be healed, or forgiven. Jesus takes the time to talk to the person and get beyond the surface and touch them with God’s grace.

So, Don, if you are reading this story today. Thank you for taking the time to talk with my family. It was terrific to see you again. You certainly created a lovely memory. For the rest of us this holiday season let us remember to allow for Divine Appointments. Take the call, stop for a visit with a friend, or answer the email. If we don’t, I think we might be missing some Divine Appointments.

Amen to that!

I would have a much better attitude about shopping if I could be sure that I'd have an experience like this.
