Historic Santa is Coming to Tyrone, PA on December 6

Location(s)

Tyrone History Museum
Tyrone, PA
See map: Google Maps

Santa Claus is comin' to town! But this is one Santa that you don't see every year.

On Thursday, December 6, 2007, the Civil War Santa will visit Tyrone, PA as part of the Tyrone Yuletyme Celebration. Kevin Rawlings will be dressed as the Civil War Santa originally depicted in the work of Thomas Nast. This patriotic Santa wears red, white and blue instead of the familiar red suit with fur trim.

Kevin will talk about the evolution of Santa and other Christmas traditions. The program begins at 7 PM at the Tyrone History Museum. To find the museum, use the Storytrax Mapper; when you get to Tyrone, follow Pennsylvania Avenue south, across the bridge to the Railroad Park. There's plenty of free parking and donations will be accepted.

This Santa's a real doll

In preparation for the program on Dec. 6, Nancy Smith and other members of the Tyrone Area Historical Society have crafted a doll dressed as the 1863 Santa.

   He's a real doll, isn't he?
