Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia

It is a sunny, fall day with a temperature of 61 degrees as I look east toward the Blue Ridge from our RV site in the Walnut Hills Campground just south of  Staunton, Virginia.  The colors are a beautiful, if muted, palette of reds, greens, yellows and browns.  The Weather Channel tells us that it is cloudy, cold and rainy in Altoona which we departed yesterday after a month of visiting with all nine of our grandchildren(five in Ohio, three in Maine and one in the Altoona area).  We are embarking on our first time as "snowbird" travelers as we chase "peak color" south along the hardwood ridges of the Appalachians.  The color seems less intense so far this year thanks to drought, excessive warmth, later frost(is that the same as excessive warmth?) or any of a half dozen other reasons we have heard for the phenomenon.  Nonetheless it is a beautiful sight and we plan to enjoy it even as we face this new adventure in retirement living.

Staunton has been a favorite of ours for many years but always as a one or two day stop.  We are going to stay here for several days and explore some of the sights including Woodrow Wilson's Presidential library, Monticello in Charlottesville, the Blue Ridge and whatever strikes our fancy.  This morning we began slowly with breakfast at a small local cafe called Kathy's where the food was good, service excellent and the windows pretty clean(the latter is my mother's test of a good restaurant) followed by a visit to our favorite chain bookstore(Books-a-Million).  This afternoon includes laundry and reading while soaking in the sight of Laurel and Hardy's Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

We don't know what this full timing adventure holds for us but we have planned carefully and with Cory caring for our house and Erin taking care of mail and business matters we are eager to begin and to share our adventures at storytrax.  See you on the road or the net.

Walton - land

I hear a bit of John Boy Walton sneaking into the prose as you explore his old stomping grounds!

One of my favorite places in that area is the Museum of Frontier American Culture. It's really cool -- these folks went to all the "homelands" of the 18th century frontier settlers and brought over real houses and barns from that time period. So as you walk around, you visit an Irish farm, a German farm, an English house, etc. It's really neat, and well worth a visit.

Enjoy your trip! I'm looking forward to reading about your adventures.

Good night, John Boy.

Yes ITS SNOWING!

I appreciate you delighting in the warm weather of our neighbor state to the south. It is cold in Central Pennsylvania and I have been outside to notice that we are experiencing SNOW FLURRIES. Wish I could be there with you on the trip, Books-a-Million would have been a fun stop.

I am still enjoying the American Chestnut Tree book. Have a safe trip. Thanks for the story! We need to get some pictures on the site.

wow!

It sounds like a good trip. Enjoy the fun, color, and bookstores. Would love to learn more about this trip south. Would even love to see the map of this trip. Hope you get a chance to share this with your grandkids.

love it!

Since my uncle moved to LAke Monticello, we've been doing his drive a few times a year, and I love the area.  Staunton is a great place too.  We went down this time last year, and in addition to the gorgeous fall colors, we lucked out and had an 80degree day on the lake, jsut fabulous.

Would love to see pictures....I'll see if I can find mine from last year....have you tried the wineries?  Even if you're not a wine person, the food is to die for!

Wineries

We have not tried them but will check the net.  We just finished a Stone Valley Rieseling with dinner and need to replenish.  Thanks for the tip.
