Forget Me Not
Occasionally I give a talk about the importance of stories. Most people have a tendency to expect a light hearted talk something they can enjoy while eating lunch. Little do they expect the following, (note it always seems to get their attention) feel free to use it.
I start by asking people to give me a show of hands how many know the name of their great grandfather. Some hands go up. Then I ask if they know where their great grandfather is buried, hands go down. With each more specific question fewer hands go up. I then make this point, within three to four generations you will face extinction. Most of the time the audience is silent, so I ask them “what will your legacy be?” and then how the stories of your life will reflect that legacy.
Understanding American history and world history is a noble effort but I would challenge you that understanding our FAMILY history is too a noble effort. Often times we better understand the history of our own country by hearing the stories of our ancestors. I better understand the Great Depression when my Grandmother retells her stories. I come to understand WWII when told by Grandfather.
I encourage you to get to know your family stories. If you care to share them here at StoryTrax.com great but even if you don’t please share them with your family. Share your own story with your kids and grandkids. Don’t let your story die but let it live in the hearts of future generations.
What is my legacy (ecooley)? I want the stories of my life to reflect three major themes.
- That I loved God.
- That I was a good husband, father, son and brother
- That I was a caring friend.
How will the stories of your life reflect your legacy?
