Fall in New England
My wife and I recently returned from a trip to New England to do some "leaf peeping". We expected typical Fall weather with "frost on the pumpkins" and days where sweaters may be appropriate. Instead, we got Indian Summer in New England - temperatures up into the 80's - Thank God for A/C in the hotels.
One of our favorite sites is Lake Placid - we stayed at Mirror Lake Inn - in the Mountain View Building - with a balcony overlooking the lake (Mirror Lake) - which was very calming as the day started to break.

Time travel
I, too, love to travel in the fall. In my experience, October is a good time to be anywhere!
I also like the illusion of traveling in time as you move around the East at this time of year. If I head up into northern Pennsylvania, the trees are at least a week or so ahead of my home base near Williamsburg, PA. Likewise, head south or east, and the leaves are a little behind. I've often considered planning a trip, either in the spring or the fall, where I would travel just enough each day to stay at the peak of one season all the time. I could follow the redbud in the spring, or the maples in the fall. It would be a blast!
Happy travels, everyone!

Beautiful pictures. Where is Mirror Lake?
Where is Mirror Lake You Ask
Mirror Lake is in downtown Lake Placid, NY - site of the 1980 Winter Olympics - in upstate NY. Lake Placid sits in the middle of the largest state park - Adirondack State Park.

that IS beautiful!!!
Yes it is:
Yes - Lake Placid is one of my favorite places. It has a bit of everything. Mirror Lake Inn and some other very nice hotels (including a Hilton) if you want to go first class, and wilderness areas if you want to go backpacking (did that in college - in the "high peaks" region just outside of Lake Placid, and of course ski slopes down the road.
If you don't know - Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics TWICE - most recenly in 1980
