Greece Fires
I was reading my magazine, and found a interesting story. During August and September there has been huge fires. Lots of them to! All of them have been in Greece. There has been heatstroke death reports. And tons of death reports- around 44. Lots of land and lives have been lost. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis says,' So many fires breaking out simultaneously in so many parts cannot be a coincidence.' So people are thinking that someone is starting them on purpose.
There nature preserves or National Parks are being destroyed by the fires. Important plants and animals are being burned. The European Union thinks all European countries need to come to the aid of Greece and its preserves.
I have trying to figure out why someone would do this. Maybe, someone is envious of Greece or is mad at the European Union. Either one- they need to be caught and punished.

I misread it
I read your title out loud and thought that a batch of fries had spilled over and caused a fire on the stove.
Seems that fires have made news a lot this year. The fires out west in states like Montana were just a few. The warm weather here in Pennsylvania is drying everything out here and is even effecting fishing in Lake Erie. I believe there may be something to this climate change idea.

Hey Uncle Erin, Mom told me to tell you that it isnt fries that cause our fires its fried chicken! I don't understand how it would efficect the fishing. Luv you!
Those chickens are tricky
Watch out for those Fried chickens!
Actually the warm weather and little rain in Erie, Pennsylvania keeps the streams low. The fish can not swim upstream because there is not enough water. So people find the fishing is not so good.
Glad you are online and writing stories. I enjoy reading the new things you are learning about. Yesterday I learned all about "Sputnik" the satellite. We are never too old to learn. Take care and I love you to.

Hot times in the old country
The story of the fires in Greece is really amazing -- and terrifying, even from space! (This link will take you to a photo from a NASA satellite that was taken last August -- it will blow your mind!)
When I look at pictures like this, it really makes me wonder about global climate change. Across the world, the number of wildfires has increased over the last 10-20 years, just about the same time that people have begun fretting about "global warming." So, are the fires somehow a result of the warming (less rain in some places, so fires have more fuel and can spread faster) or are they causing the warming (all that smoke messes with the atmosphere and sunlight)? What do you think?
The loss of human life and property is a tragedy, but it also makes me sad to think of all the ancient archeological sites and ruins that are also being destroyed. I mean, geez, Greece is where democracy was invented, so its heritage is our heritage, too!
And, while I know this is nothing to joke about, I will admit that I did appreciate your title, "Greece Fires;" I thought at first you were writing about something that may have happened in your kitchen (grease fire). Great title -- it got my attention!
Climate change cause and effect
As if they were monitoring our blog here, there are two articles in today's online version of the New York Times that address some of these questions. After reading both, it seems to me that there are still conflicting views among scientists about the concept of global warming.

One thing these DO do is demonstrate that there IS something going on at a global scale!
