Great Beginnings

I've just begun reading a new novel - Bridge of Sighs - by one of my favorite authors, Richard Russo.  I have a ritual with a new book that never varies.  I read all of the cover information and any reviews that precede the novel.  I note from which publications the reviews were taken, and who wrote them - some well-known reviewers' tastes are  vastly different from mine.  I note the publication date, and whether I am fortunate enough to have a first edition.  I drink in the title page, noting the special font and any dedication - wondering who that person is in the writer's life to deserve such an honor.  Then I open to the first page and suspend my existence for as long as the reading session lasts.  I love my books!

Just today I realized how parallel this little ritual is to my movie-going ritual.  Next to reading, I love my movies!  I generally go alone; this used to be a point of contention between me and my movie-averse hubby, but now I actually prefer it.  I don't have to worry if another person is having a good time, enjoying the show, if they got the meaning in that last shot.  Anyway . . . I go alone and go early.  I always buy a small popcorn with no butter and a cherry Coke.  I choose a seat in the back, and if I'm lucky I can get one of the solo seats at the back of one of the theaters in Altoona's Carmike Cinema at the Logan Valley Mall.  Those are the absolute best!  Now, to fully enjoy the movie experience Anne-style, you must have the proper refreshments, seating, and be in place while the lights are on.  Now comes the best part . . . the lights dim and the sound comes on really loud!  I just love it!  No matter that you must endure seemingly endless previews of coming attractions - how else can you get a good flavor for your upcoming forays to the theatre? - and a few comericals - gotta' love that dancing popcorn!  It's an experience that I truly love.

It's interesting to acknowledge my little rituals . . . maybe to some I'm an old lady who's set in her ways!  But I know what makes me happy!

I am reading too

I am reading a book by one of my favorite writers Ravi Zacharias. I often find my self doing something similar. I do all of my research at Amazon.com and then I go to Barnes and Noble or will order the book through one of the local book sellers.
