The Tyrone Garden Club

This article was written by Suzanne Sickler Ohl, an early member of the Tyrone Area Historical Society.  It was first published in September 1992.             Eagle Scout Randy Irvin and Scouts from Troop 20 are proving what long-time Tyrone residents have always known:  “Tyrone is a community of concerned and caring people.”  They are doing this by helping in the First Phase of the development of Railroad Park at the southern end of Pennsylvania Avenue near where the Pennsylvania Railroad Station was once located.

Good Home Cookin'

This article was written by Suzanne Sickler Ohl, an early member of the Tyrone Area Historical Society.  It was first published in September 1992.             [The Annual] Farm City Day presents a good opportunity to examine farm and town life throughout the history of Tyrone, Pennsylvania.  A comparison of the similarities and differences that existed among the self-sufficient farm families and the town families reveals that they were more alike than different.  Throughout it all can be seen the interrelationships that existed among the different groups.

The Altoona-Tyrone Speedway

This article was written by Suzanne Sickler Ohl, an early member of the Tyrone Area Historical Society.  It was first published in October 1992.             “Lots of cars going to the Speedway – counted 1019 cars in one hour.”  This excerpt was taken from a diary written on September 4, 1923.  The destination of these cars was the Altoona-Tyrone Speedway at Tipton and the occasion was the inauguration of the one and a quarter mile oval board auto racing track.  As luck would have it, rain fell at 2:10 PM that day causing the race to be postponed until September 9, 1923.  Then began one of the nation’s biggest auto racing meccas.  World renowned racers and tens of thousands of racing fans from across the country flocked into this area.

This article was written by Suzanne Sickler Ohl, an early member of the Tyrone Area Historical Society.  It was first published in November 1992.             Even after clothing became available in town and country stores, women made it in the home.  Home dressmakers were common.  They would stay in the home for several days or a week and make the clothes for the family for the season.  They also made bed linens, towels, and scarves from the muslim or linen fabrics bought by the bolt.

Sunlight and Firelight

Fun under the Christmas Tree

This article was written by Suzanne Sickler Ohl, an early member of the Tyrone Area Historical Society.  It was first published in December 1992.             When a child is asked what is wanted for Christmas no doubt the most popular answer would be “toys.”  That could mean anything from a ball, to an expensive doll or mechanical toy advertised in the latest toy catalog.  By far the most popular are toys that let children use their imaginations or relate to exciting occupations and people.
